Black Women Hairstyles
Black hairstyles are quickly coming away from the tight braids and coming into the mainstream hairstyles. There are more bob’s and more regular hairstyles for black women being seen today on African-American’s than there are the tight, crazy braids. This reflects their confidence and the total integration into society.
Popular Black Hairstyles Trends for Women
African-American’s have been the front-runners for many different and creative hairstyles ranging from short razor cuts, braids, dreadlocks, cornrows and many more to name.
The short razor haircuts have been perfected by the African-American’s as they shave designs into their hair.
Beautiful Braids have been brought to a completely new extreme with the tiny braids and wild patterns used to braid the hair.
Cornrows have gone from rare to mainstream with the help of the African-Americans and black people.
Short Hairstyles for Black People
Just as the African-Americans have been very good about designing hairstyles and maintaining the African roots in their hairstyles, they have managed to take over the mainstream black hairstyles just as well. It is now more common to see black women with bob’s and short haircuts than the crazy braids.
Long Black Hairstyles
It is also very common to see black women with the long flowing hair and the layers that are so popular in Hollywood today. It is common to see African-American men with their hair nicely shaved and shaped, as opposed to the tiny and tight braids that used to grace their heads.
Just as much as the African-American’s have changed throughout the ages, so has their black shiny hair. The entire time, for their better acceptance and placements in society. Let the world just sit back and see what their creative minds will come up with next.

I’m surprised to read this article because, as an African-American living in the U.S for 50 years, I see the facts differently. The writer seems to believe that braids and cornrows have long been the norm for African Americans in this country, and that we’re now wearing more “mainstream” styles. I think the truth is that our Western culture has established a Eurocentric standard of beauty, especially for Black women. So straight styles have been more normal for black women since about the late 1970’s, not the writer’s “tight braids.”
In more recent years, African Americans and others of African descent have increasingly embraced our natural hair, moving away from, “mainstream styles.” I’m not suggesting that most have made this switch; rather, I challenge the writer’s assertion that we’re moving fom “tight braids” to more Eurocentric styles.
The notion that our coily hair is not acceptable, not beautiful, not elegant, not sexy, and not professional is left over from the days of slavery and fed by Hollywood and the beauty supply industry. The “flowing hair in Hollywood” notwithstanding, we have begun to define beauty for ourselves.

Popular African-American styles have changed many times throughout the years. Popular trends have been braids and natural styles to straight styles to afro styles to long flowing styles. As the reader above wrote, many have embraced their braids and natural styles again. Many times over, other cultures embrace these trends as well because they see the beauty in them.
